LONDON 2012: Olympics Watch – Tues 31st July

London 2012 enters its fourth day of competition and there is plenty to enjoy from a British perspective throughout the day.

Forty years have passed since GB last won team eventing gold, but this is their strongest team in generations. The team final begins at 10.30am on BBC One with the individual final, where British hopes are also high, to follow.

William Fox-Pitt (above) will be a strong contender in the individual final, with German Michael Jung is aiming to achieve an unprecedented hat-trick – by winning the World, European and Olympic titles in the same year.

At Lee Valley’s state-of-the-art canoe slalom course, Britain’s David Florence – arguably the team’s biggest medal hope, having won silver in Beijing four years ago – competes in the men’s C1 (single-person canoe) event from 15:35.

Following that, the British women’s gymnastics team will be in action (unless they fail to qualify for the final, which is unlikely).

At Wembley Stadium, there is the enticing prospect of GB’s women facing Brazil in their Olympic football group game, with a record-breaking 70,000 expected to be in attendance.

Hope Powell’s side have already qualified for the quarter-finals after two victories from their opening group matches.

Running throughout the day is the men’s -81kg judo event. Euan Burton – twice a world bronze medallist – fights in that category and is the leading British contender in the sport.

And keep an eye on fencing, in the same venue (the Excel), where Richard Kruse could get the chance to fight for a men’s individual foil medal. The medal matches begin at 19:10.

Other GB teams in action include: men’s basketball (v Brazil, 4.45pm), men’s handball (v Sweden, 2.30pm), women’s hockey (v South Korea, 4pm), men’s volleyball (v Australia, 8pm), men’s water polo (v Serbia, 6.20pm).

Ensure you don’t miss an busy day of action live on the BBC. You can make your choice of Olympic viewing by pressing the Red Button on your digital remote, or by accessing the BBC’s Olympics channels or the BBC Sport website.
