LONDON 2012: Olympics Watch – Weds 1st August

After mixed fortunes in the road cycling races on the opening weekend, the focus of attention from an expectant home nation returns on Great Britain’s cyclists to deliver in the men’s and women’s individual time-trials.

Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins, who won two out of the three time-trials on his way to an historic first victory for GB in the race barely two weeks ago, will be the leading British gold-medal contender in the men’s race, while 2010 world time-trial champion and 2008 Olympic silver medalist Emma Pooley will carry the hopes in the women’s race.

Taking place around Hampton Court, the pan-flat course is set to be a pure test of concentration and speed. The women set off on the individual time-trial at 12.30pm, with the men following at 2.15pm.

Over on Dorney Lake, the first Rowing finals will take place and it could be a very special day for Team GB, with plenty of high hopes to deliver medals.

Britain’s women double sculls pairing of Helen Glover and Heather Stanning, who are unbeaten so far this year, are strong favourites to their country’s first ever women’s Olympic rowing title.

In potentially one of the biggest fairytale stories of these Games, can 40-year-old Greg Searle win Olympic gold for Britain after 10 years in retirement?

It will be tough – the men’s eight, in which he races, took two silver medals and a bronze in this year’s three World Cup races. Germany have won the last three world titles.

Searle will race in the final at 12.30pm on BBC One, 20 years after his first Olympic gold medal in Barcelona.

More excitement is expected at the North Greenwich Arena with the gymnastics competition, as Dan Purvis will carry British hopes in the men’s all-around gymnastics final from 4.30pm.

Its also another busy day inside the Aquatics Centre. There will be strong British interest in the men’s 200m breaststroke with Michael Jamieson, who set a new British record in his semi-final last night, and Andrew Willis battling for a place on the podium.

Sadly for GB supporters, Ellen Gandy, ranked fourth in the world in women’s 200m butterfly, failed to qualify for the final, but Gemma Lowe managed to secure a place in the race.

The evening’s swimming finals begin at 7.30pm on BBC One.

Staying on water, the men’s kayak canoe slalom final takes place at Lee Valley Water Centre, with GB’s Richard Hounslow possessing an outside chance of making it onto the podium.

As far as the team sports are concerned, Great Britain are in action in: women’s basketball (v Russia, 4.45pm), women’s handball (v Brazil, 4.15pm), men’s hockey (v South Africa, 4pm) , women’s volleyball (v Italy 4.45pm), and women’s water polo (v Australia 19:40).

Plus, Great Britain’s footballers need to secure victory over Uruguay to guarantee qualification into the knock-out stages (k/o 7.45pm).
