LONDON 2012: Olympics Watch – Saturday 4th August

Middle Saturday of every Olympic Games is always billed as ‘Super Saturday’, and London 2012 is no exception as there is an unmissable line-up of world class sport happening all across London.

It will be pretty hard for armchair fans to know where to turn next, with so many great sporting events occuring at the same time on a day which could define the London 2012 Games for the host nation.

Among the top priorities has to be the climax of the women’s heptathlon and men’s 10,000m, featuring Great Britain’s biggest athletics medal hopes – Jessica Ennis and Mo Farah.

It promises to be a golden hour for British sport if both can prevail in front of a vociferous home crowd, and up to 80,000 fans inside the Olympic Stadium will be crossing their fingers in hope that they can book their place in Olympic history.

Jessica’s events last throughout the day but the decider will be the 800m, live on BBC One at 8.35pm.

Following the heptathlon finale, Farah will go for 10,000m gold in a field which includes Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele, who is bidding to become the first man to win a third Olympic 10,000m title.

The women’s 100m final ends the night, and is expected to feature another battle between Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and USA’s Allyson Felix.

Earlier in the day, Usain Bolt – the man who stunned the world with three imperious world records at Beijing 2008 – can be spotted in the men’s 100m heats from 12.30pm.

But you may want to be up well ahead of that in time to see British world triathlon champion Helen Jenkins in the women’s race, which begins in Hyde Park at 9am.

Later in the morning, there will be all the action  on the final day of rowing at Eton Dorney, including the men’s four final, where another Ashes scrap between GB and Australia will take place, plus Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter in the lightweight men’s double sculls.

In the afternoon Laura Trott takes to the boards in the first of her events as she bids for double track cycling gold, riding in the women’s team pursuit.

Plus, Serena Williams faces Maria Sharapova in the Olympic women’s tennis singles final on Centre Court (from 2pm approx).

The swimming competition enters its final evening at the Aquatics Centre. Fran Halsall has the women’s 50m freestyle final to go at before the sport bows out with the relays: women’s and men’s 4x100m medley.

Finally, the men’s Olympic football has reached the quarter-final stage, with Team GB looking to go one better than their female counterparts, who crashed out to Canada yesterday, and book their place in the semi-finals with a victory over South Korea.

Other Great Britain teams in action include men’s Basketball (v Australia 8pm), men’s handball (v Tunisia, 9.30am), women’s hockey (v China, 4pm), men’s volleyball (v Poland, 11.30am), and men’s water polo (v Hungary, 6.20pm).

Ensure you don’t miss what promises to be an incredible ‘Super Saturday’ at the Olympics, all live on the BBC. You can make your choice of Olympic viewing by pressing the Red Button on your digital remote, or by accessing the BBC’s Olympics channels or the BBC Sport website.
