LONDON 2012: Olympics Watch – Sunday 5th August

Despite his recent travails, this is the one millions of people around the globe will be waiting for – Usain Bolt in the men’s 100m final.

Never mind the dip in form which saw training partner Yohan Blake beat him in the run-up to the Games, or the perilous possibility of his false-starting just as he did at last year’s World Championships in Daegu – there can be no question that Bolt running the 100m is the most eagerly awaited of Olympic events.

Bolt will defend his Olympic title at 9.50pm, but there is much more to this night’s athletics.

Among other highlights, watch out for Great Britain’s Christine Ohuruogu in the women’s 400m final as she defends her title (9.10pm), and Yamile Aldama in the women’s triple jump.

Plus, watch BBC One at 11am for the women’s marathon, which takes in many of London’s most famous landmarks.

Sadly, Britain’s Paula Radcliffe will not compete in her fifth consecutive Games after ruling herself out of the race due to injury, but GB will be represented by Claire Hallissey, Freya Murray and Mara Yamauchi.

Down in Weymouth this promises to be a huge day for British interests. Both the Finn and Star classes reach their medal races, meaning this is the day on which Ben Ainslie could wrap up a fourth Olympic sailing gold medal in the former.

Ainslie has been involved in a dramatic battle with Denmark’s Jonas Hogh-Christensen all week and he goes into Sunday’s decisive Finn medal race knowing a fourth gold medal is tantalisingly close.

Defending Olympic champions Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson might be a safer bet (13:00) for Britain having dominated the Star class.

At Wimbledon, Britain’s Andy Murray is aiming for a unique feat in becoming a double Olympic tennis champion as he plays in two finals on the same afternoon.

Firstly in the men’s singles, can he make amends for his agonising defeat by Roger Federer just four weeks ago in their grand slam encounter?

Following his battle with Swiss star, there will be no time to rest for Murray, as he will be out with Laura Robson in the mixed doubles final against the Belarus pair of Victoria Azarenka and Max Miryni.

In the Velodrome, Great Britain’s Ed Clancy will start the second and final day of the multi-discipline omnium in fourth place after winning the flying lap, finishing 11th in the points race and fifth in the elimination race on Saturday.

With his stronger events to come in the individual pursuit (10:00), scratch race (17:01) and time trial (18:16), a medal is a real possibility.

Victoria Pendleton and Jason Kenny will also be action in the early stages of their respective sprint competitions.

Women’s boxing a sport making its Olympic debut, begins at 1.30pm with three excellent British medal hopes in the shape of Nicola Adams, Natasha Jonas and Savannah Marshall.

From 2pm, follow the gymnastics apparatus finals on what could be a historic day for Louis Smith.

He won bronze on the pommel horse in Beijing, but can he take the gold at London 2012? Dan Purvis could also feature – and win a medal – in the floor final.

GB teams in action include women’s Basketball (v Brazil, 10.15pm), women’s handball (v Croatia, 4.15pm), men’s hockey (v Australia , 7pm), women’s volleyball (v Japan , 2.45pm), and women’s water polo (quarter-final TBC).

Ensure you don’t miss another unmissable day of Olympics action, all live on the BBC. You can make your choice of Olympic viewing by pressing the Red Button on your digital remote, or by accessing the BBC’s Olympics channels or the BBC Sport website.

You can follow all the action from Day 9 at the London 2012 Olympic Games across the BBC. Details below:

The highlight of today’s action inside the Olympic Stadium is undoubtedly the final race of the day, the men’s 100m final at 9.50pm.

The race is always one of the iconic moments of any Games, and tonight promises to be no exception, as world record holder and defending champion Usain Bolt looks to retain the title under expected stiff competition from compatriot Yohan Blake, who defeated Bolt in both the 100m and 200m at the Jamaican trials.

Chances of British success this evening could come in the women’s 400m, where Christine Ohuruogu is the reigning champion, and in the women’s triple jump courtesy of world indoor champion Yamile Aldama.

The full schedule features the women’s 400m hurdles first round from 7.00, men’s high jump qualification from 7.05, women’s triple jump final from 7.35, men’s 100m semi-finals from 7.45 and final at 9.50, men’s 1500m semi-finals from 8.15, men’s hammer final from 8.20, men’s 400m semi-finals from 8.40, women’s 400m final at 9.10 and men’s 3,000m steeplechase final at 9.25.
