Thursday promises great action across a broad range of events, starting in Hyde Park’s Serpentine lake at midday when Great Britain’s Keri-Anne Payne takes on the marathon swim.
Each entrant will swim six laps of the course as they aim to win the Olympic title, with Payne among the favourites to claim gold, having finished second four years ago in Beijing, where the event made its debut in the Games.
The medal race for Luke Patience and Stuart Bithell, who currently lie in second place in sailing’s 470 class, begins at 1pm, followed by the first ever Olympic women’s boxing finals from 4.30pm, with GB’s Nicola Adams looking to win the inaugural gold medal as she faces tough Chinese fighter Ren Cancan.
At 7.45pm the women’s football final takes place at Wembley between the United States and Japan, in a repeat of the 2011 Women’s World Cup final.
In athletics, the star attraction of the night has to be the Bolt v Blake sequel in the men’s 200m, as Jamaica’s sprinting sensations Usain Bolt, who successfully defended his 100m title last Sunday, and Johan Blake going head-to-head once more.
The men’s decathlon enters its final day and 80,000 inside the Olympic Stadium will find out if new world record-holder Ashton Eaton of the United States can convert his form into gold.
It will be a night with limited interest for British fans, as medal hope Phillips Idowu failed to qualify for the triple jump final after missing out on a place in the top 12 on Tuesday, but Andrew Osagie will be representing Team GB in the 800m final.
Great Britain men’s hockey team have reached their first Olympic semi final in 20 years, and they will face the Netherlands for a place in the gold medal match.
All the team sports are nearing or are about to reach their finales, including the basketball women’s semi-finals, handball women’s semi-finals, volleyball women’s semi-finals and water polo women’s medal matches.
