DARTS: ESPN to broadcast 2012 World Masters

ESPN will broadcast live coverage of the BDO Winmau World Masters for a second consecutive year.

The tournament will take place between October 10-14 at Hull’s City Hall, with ESPN broadcasting exclusively live coverage of key sessions over the final three days.

Coverage will again be led by Ray Stubbs, presenter of BDO darts events for several years during his time with the BBC, with the commentary team to be confirmed nearer the event.

All discussion and analysis will come live from the venue, capturing the unique atmosphere of live darts.

As one of the oldest established major tournaments in world darts, having been played since 1974, the Winmau World Masters is one of the most prestigious titles in world darts.

ESPN’s first year broadcasting the Masters saw Yorkshireman Scott Waites end Martin Adams’ impressive run of three consecutive Masters victories, knocking Adams out in the Semi-Final before going on to become the 2011 Men’s World Master.

The two will both go into the 2012 Masters with high hopes, but can expect tough competition from the likes of Stephen Bunting, Tony O’Shea, Jan Dekker and top ranking players from the BDO and WDF.

ESPN will be become the first UK broadcaster to cover tournaments staged by the British Darts Organisation (BDO) and Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), in the same year, with the channel also covering their first PDC event – the European Championship – in September.

Jeroen Oerlemans, Vice-President, TV Channels, ESPN EMEA, said: “We’re very pleased to bring viewers the Winmau World Masters again in 2012.

“Our first year broadcasting the competition was a great success and we’re looking forward to being part of the wonderful atmosphere and excitement.”

Ray Stubbs will present ESPN’s live coverage of the 2012 Winmau World Masters from Hull, with commentary by Tony Green, Jim Proudfoot and Vassos Alexander, and Rob McCaffery will conduct pre and post-match interviews.

Live coverage on Saturday, October 13, will include the draw for the forthcoming 2013 Lakeside World Championships, which ESPN will be screening live from Lakeside Country Club in the New Year.
