FOOTBALL: BBC to screen England Women’s Euro 2013 qualifier

England Women’s vital Euro 2013 qualifier against Croatia will be broadcast live on the BBC.

Maintaining the momentum of a sensational year of sport, and following on from the high-profile Olympic campaign for the Team GB women’s team, the match at Walsall’s Banks’s Stadium will be shown live on BBC Two and the BBC Sport website on Wednesday, September 19.

A win will take Hope Powell’s team to the top of their group and secure automatic qualification for the European Championship next year in Sweden.

England will go into the game full of confidence as they are unbeaten so far, and thrashed Croatia 6-0 in the reverse fixture in Vrbovec in March.

That game featured two goals from Steph Houghton, who was the star of Team GB’s run to the quarter-finals at London 2012.

Jacqui Oatley will present the BBC’s live coverage from Walsall, accompanied by pundits Sue Smith and Faye White. Match commentary comes from Nigel Adderley and Lucy Ward, and pitchside interviews by Karthi Gnanasegaram.

Live coverage of the Croatia game follows on from England women’s last home Euro 2013 qualifier against the Netherlands which was also shown live on BBC Two in June.

The BBC continues its long-running association with the England Women’s team, having screened a number of high-profile fixtures over the years, including the 2007 and 2011 World Cup campaigns and the Euro 2009 Final defeat to Germany.

England coach Hope Powell is delighted with the continued support of the BBC: “I say it every time, but it really is fantastic to have the weight of the BBC behind us.

“When they show our games they really help to promote women’s football in this country and their coverage is always excellent.

“They did a great job in broadcasting the last four women’s international tournaments and I really enjoyed their coverage of the Olympics as well.

“I hope we can put on a good show for them in Walsall but the most important thing is to get the win which will send us to next summer’s Euros.”

Barbara Slater, Director, BBC Sport, added: “Bringing women’s sport to as wide an audience as possible is really important to us and we’re delighted to be showing this game live on BBC Two.

“Over the summer viewers demonstrated a real appetite for women’s football and we look forward to continuing to support our international football team.”
