Britain’s Laura Robson competes in her first WTA final as she takes on Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-Wei in the Guangzhou International Open.
British Eurosport has announced that it has put together a last-minute deal to broadcast exclusive live coverage of the match, starting at 8am on Saturday, September 22.
The 18-year-old will be looking to cause another huge upset and become the first British woman to win a WTA Tour event in 24 years.
Robson came into this week’s event ranked at a career-high number 74 in the world, and the WTA’s youngest top-100 player produced an inspired display to seal her place in the tournament showpiece and continue her hugely encouraging run.
The British number one reached the fourth round at a grand slam for the first time in her career at this year’s US Open, beating former champion Kim Clijsters and 2011 French Open champion Li Na.
Her scintillating run in New York followed on from picking up a silver medal at the London Olympics alongside Andy Murray in the mixed doubles competition.
Robson is the first British woman to reach a Tour singles final in more than 20 years after she beat third seed Sorana Cirstea 6-4 6-2 in the semi-finals.
Jo Durie reached a WTA final back in 1990, but Sara Gomer was the last Briton to win a WTA singles title in July 1988.
The Guangzhou tournament has not been televised in the UK, but British Eurosport announced on the eve of the tournament finale that it had put together a last-minute arrangement to air this potentially momentous occasion for British tennis.
Live coverage of Laura Robson’s first WTA final will broadcast on British Eurosport 2. Commentary will be provided by Chris Bradnam and David Felgate.
Online streaming is available via the Eurosport Player (subscription required), and extended highlights will be shown later in the day on British Eurosport.
