Some familiar names from the world of European football will adorn the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League this season, and ITV and ESPN will be following the competition every step of the way to the final next May at the Amsterdam ArenA.
Four matches will be broadcast live on concluding matchday in the group stages, with ITV4 screening live coverage of Tottenham and Liverpool’s games once again, while ESPN has Newcastle United’s away trip to Bordeaux.
Matt Smith presents ITV4’s Europa League double-header, starting with Liverpool’s trip to Italy to face Udinese (k/o 6.00pm), followed by the clash at White Hart Lane between Tottenham Hotspur and Panathinaikos (k/o 8.05pm).
Victory for Liverpool would see them progress, but defeat would lead to elimination, while Spurs just need a draw to secure a place in the last 32.
Peter Drury and Jim Beglin commentate on the opening match in Italy, with Sam Matterface and Andy Townsend at White Hart Lane. Studio analysis on both games comes from Robbie Fowler and Gordon Strachan.
ESPN has exclusive coverage of Newcastle United’s away clash against French side Bordeaux at the Stade Chaban-Delmas (k/o 6.00pm).
Alan Pardew’s men have already secured their place in the last 32, but a win on Thursday night would mean the Magpies progress as Group D winners.
The clash between Genk and FC Basel, the two teams at the top of Group G, will round off ESPN’s double-header (k/o 8pm).
ITV and ESPN will share coverage of the UEFA Europa League for the next three seasons under a new deal signed in October 2011.
ITV4 will have the best of the action on each matchday, presented by Matt Smith, with the first and second pick games during the group stage and the knockout stages.
The majority of ITV’s live games will be shown on digital channel ITV4, with matches featuring British teams from the quarter final stages onwards to be screened on ITV1.
ITV will also screen live and exclusive coverage of the Europa League final.
ESPN will broadcast two matches during the group phase, and a selection of matches during the knockout stages.
Ray Stubbs presents ESPN’s coverage, with commentary and analysis from Jon Champion, Chris Waddle, Craig Burley and John Barnes.
Both broadcasters will screen a dedicated highlights package on Fridays during every matchweek.
