FOOTBALL: BBC secures UEFA Women’s Euro 2013 rights

The BBC has acquired the rights to broadcast every match from the 2013 UEFA Women’s European Championship in Sweden next summer.

The deal will see live coverage of every England match, plus both semi-finals and the final played out across BBC Two and BBC Three.

In addition, all other peak-time games will be broadcast on BBC Three.

After a tremendous response to Women’s football during London 2012 Olympics, the BBC is committed to raising the profile of women’s sport in the UK and building on its already impressive portfolio of events and related output.

The corporation, which has covered the last two Women’s Euros, has followed the England Women’s team throughout 2012, including live coverage of their home UEFA Euro 2013 qualifiers against the Netherlands and Croatia, plus their away friendly against France.

Hope Powell’s team finished runners-up in the last Women’s European Championships in 2009 when they lost 6-2 to Germany in the final at Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium.

They qualified unbeaten from Group 6 for next summer’s showpiece tournament following an impressive campaign, which included victories over Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia and the Netherlands.

England will face France, Russia and Spain in the group stages.

UEFA Women’s Euro 2013 takes place in Sweden from July 10-28.

Group stage matches will be played from July 10-18, with the top two in each section and the two best third-placed teams progressing to the quarter-finals on July 21-22.

The semi-finals are on July 24-25, and the final will be held at the Friends Arena in Solna, home to Swedish Allsvenskan side AIK, on July 28.

BBC Director of Sport, Barbara Slater comments: “We’re delighted to be adding the UEFA European Women’s Championships to our portfolio of women’s sport.

“The response to women’s football at London 2012 showed that there is a strong appetite for it and we look forward to bringing our audiences the excitement and drama of another major tournament.”
