BASKETBALL: NBA London Live 2013 – Live on Sky Sports & Sky 3D

NBA crosses the Atlantic for its third regular-season game in Europe featuring three-time NBA champions Detroit Pistons and the two-time champion New York Knicks, exclusively live on Sky Sports and Sky 3D.

The two sides heading into battle along the banks of the River Thames are among the oldest franchises in the NBA and take to the hardwood at the famous London venue for what promises to be an exhilarating evening of world-class basketball.

Sky Sports will show NBA London Live 2013 on Thursday, January 17, as part of a new agreement to screen live games during the remainder of the current season.

Following the success of the first ever regular-season games in Europe in 2011 which saw the Toronto Raptors and New Jersey Nets battle it out in London in two memorable games, the NBA returns to the world famous O2 Arena.

Tickets have long sold-out for the game which bodes well for the growth of the sport in the UK following the success of NBA being held on British shores in 2011.

NBA London Live 2013 also marks the return of major international basketball to the O2 Arena since the venue played host to the men’s and women’s Olympic tournaments last summer during London 2012.

For Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler, they return to the city where they helped Team USA win the Gold medal at the 2012 Games.

Anthony will be one to watch in London, as the Brooklyn born player consistently posts high scores and strong performances, and is one of the most valued commodities in the NBA.

The 7ft 1in Chandler from California is known for his domination in terms of rebounds per game, and was named defensive player of the year for the 2011-12 season.

The Olympic gold medallists are just two of the many big names that will be gracing the O2 Arena on Thursday night.

Sx-time NBA All-Star Amar’e Stoudemire and the experienced duo of Jason Kidd and Marcus Camby are also set to line up for the Knicks.

Meanwhile, the squad sheet of the Pistons should feature long-time players Tayshaun Prince and Jason Maxiell and the young trio of Brandon Knight, Greg Monroe, and Jonas Jerebko.

The Knicks have been performing extremely well this season, with their 23-12 record in the Eastern Conference only surpassed by reigning champions Miami Heat.

The team look on track for the post-season and will aim to provide a real challenge towards their first championship since 1973.

The Detroit Pistons tell a slightly different story. After succumbing to eight successive losses at the start of the season, the team has rallied to a 13-23 record, with the playoffs only three places off.

This can be attributed to current top performer Greg Monroe, leading the team in points, rebounds and steals for the season so far.

With the London game attracting a plethora of NBA superstars to UK shores, many view this as both a tribute to Britain’s ability to host top sporting events and a sign that the NBA sees this country as a potential hotbed for the sport.

The NBA is following the lead of the NFL, which has brought regular season games to British shores for seven consecutive years and will be expanding to two games a year from next season.

Following London Live 2013, Sky Sports’ NBA coverage continues with live Sunday night games for the rest of the regular season, including double-headers most weekends.

This will be followed by live coverage of the NBA Playoff games, the entire Eastern Conference Finals, and every game of the NBA Finals in June.

NBA London Live 2013 will be the first live NBA game to be broadcast live in 3D in the UK, with Sky’s 3D channel providing coverage of the game in this unique viewing format.

As well as being available on Sky Sports HD and Sky 3D, the game will also be available to watch live on mobile, online and tablet devices via Sky Go.
