BBC Sport and British Eurosport will have extensive coverage of the 2013 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2013 in Schladming.
The Austrian resort has been a fixture in the men’s alpine skiing World Cup schedule for over 30 years and will play host to the biggest winter sports event of the year from February 4-17.
Since 1973, 31 events have been held at the Austrian resort and the host nation has unsurprisingly been the most triumphant, boasting 14 of the 31 winners as well as having had 37 medal winners and 91 skiers finish in the top ten.
The skiing region of Schladming is nestled in the heart of the Styrian Enns valley.
It is known as the ‘four mountain region’ which includes the Planai and Hochwurzen mountains.
The Planai is the main peak, reaching a height of 1906 metres.
The competitors to look out for during the two festival of world class skiing include Aksel Lund Svindal, Bode Miller, Ivica Kostelic, Lindsey Vonn, Maria Riesch and Michaela Kirchgasser.
Benjamin Raich and Hermann Maier have been the most successful athletes for Austria, with Raich winning on four occasions and Maier emerging victorious from three events.
Swiss skier Pirmin Zurbriggen was the second most successful competitor in Schladming, picking up three wins and finishing in the top 10 on six occasions and his success has made Switzerland the second most successful nation in Schladming, having won on a further two occasions.
The 2013 event promises to give fans a glimpse as to who will be in contention for medal glory ahead of next year’s Winter Olympics in Sochi.
Some 400,000 visitors are expected to attend over the 14-day event. In eleven disciplines, 650 athletes from 70 nations will fight it out for 33 medals.
BBC Sport will have extensive live coverage and highlights from the 2013 World Ski Championships.
All the main events will be shown live or delayed via the BBC Red Button on TV, online via the BBC Sport website and internet-connected TVs.
Highlights of all the key action will be shown in two episodes of Ski Sunday on BBC Two and BBC HD, presented by Graham Bell and Ed Leigh, on February 10 and February 17.
British Eurosport will also cover the key events throughout the two-week event, including the feature Men’s and Women’s downhill.
On-site at the venue will be Eurosport expert and former world champion Didier Cuche, who will conduct live interviews from the mixed zone to get immediate reaction from the biggest stars.
Eurosport show Ski Pass will be shown each day, featuring the expertise of Bode Miller and special guests to review the day’s action.
