FOOTBALL: UEFA Champions League & Europa League – Quarter Final Draws

Following four weeks of dramatic knockout football the all-important draws for both the quarter-finals stages of Europe’s two major club tournaments take place on Friday (March 15).

For the first time since 1995/96 season there will be no representatives from the Premier League in the last eight of the UEFA Champions League, but nonetheless there will be teams from five different nations represented, including Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

This will be followed by the draw for quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League where Tottenham, Chelsea and Newcastle will discover their opponents in the next stage of the competition.

Live coverage of both draws from Nyon, Switzerland, will feature on Sky Sports News and British Eurosport.

Online streaming from Nyon will also be available via the UEFA website.

Eight clubs from five countries will feature in the draw for the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals from 11.00am at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.

Despite the notable absence of English representation, the remaining teams comprise a rich variety of styles and experience as well as the potential for some mouth-watering ties.

Bayern Munich and competition debutants Malaga claimed the last two berths in the draw, with the latter’s defeat of FC Porto means that for the second year running there will be a new face in the last eight, after APOEL Nicosia last season.

Spain will have three sides in the draw – Barcelona, Real Madrid and Malaga – the first time a single nation has provided three or more teams for the quarter-finals since England’s three representatives in 2010/11.

Real Madrid’s hopes of a record tenth European Cup remain alive after they ousted Manchester United last week, while Juventus, Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain all ended long waits to reach the last eight again with victory in their respective round of 16 ties.

Real Madrid v Galatasaray
Paris Saint-Germain v Barcelona
Bayern Munich v Juventus

Friday’s draw will be conducted by Gianni Infantino, UEFA’s General Secretary, who will be joined by former Champions League winner Steve McManaman.

The draw will be open, meaning, for example, that Real Madrid and Barcelona can meet and the side drawn first will play the first leg at home.

The quarter-final ties will be played on April 2/3 and the second legs on April 9/10.

Live coverage of the draw proceedings will be broadcast on Sky Sports News and British Eurosport.

Julian Warren will host a special 90-minute show from 11.00am featuring all the build-up and reaction to the draw, with guests David Ginola, Ray Wilkins and Steve McClaren joining him in the studio for expert analysis.

In a change to previous years, a seperate semi-final draw will be held in Nyon on Friday, April 12, and those games will take place on April 23/24 and April 30/May 1, with the final on Saturday, May 25 at Wembley Stadium.

The quarter-final draw for European football’s second major club competition will also be made in Nyon.

Tottenham, Chelsea and Newcastle United booked their places in last final eight in dramatic style on the eve of the draw.

Spurs survived an Inter Milan fightback to progress on the away-goals rule, while Chelsea saw off Steaua Bucharest and Newcastle beat Anzhi Makhachkala.

UPDATE: UEL Quarter Finals

Chelsea v Rubin Kazan
Tottenham Hotspur v FC Basel
Fenerbahce v Lazio
Benfica v Newcastle United

As with the preceeding Champions League draw, the quarter-final pairings are determined by an open draw in which no teams are seeded and clubs from the same national association can be drawn against each other.

The side drawn first will play the first leg at home.

Also mirroring its sister competition, the Europa League semi-final draw will be made on Friday, April 12, with those ties to be played on 25 April and 2 May. This year’s final will be held at the Amsterdam ArenA on May 15.

Live coverage of the Europa League quarter-final draw will be shown on British Eurosport, with updates and reaction on Sky Sports News.
