BROADCASTING: Matchroom Sport seals new Sky Sports deal for fishing, pool and ping pong

Matchroom Sport has announced a new agreement with Sky Sports to continue its coverage of a wide variety of popular sporting events for a further five years.

Founded by Barry Hearn, the sports company’s new agreement guarantees nearly 200 hours of coverage from ten events on Sky Sports each year, including some of its most well-known sporting properties such as the Mosconi Cup, Fish ‘O’ Mania and the World Championship of Ping Pong.

The deal runs up to the end of 2017 and extends the long-standing relationship between the two organisations to over 25 years.

The 20 year-old Mosconi Cup, the Ryder Cup of pool, will continue to be broadcast on Sky Sports each December.

Following a successful debut in 2013, the World Championship of Ping Pong will return to Sky screens in 2014 and beyond, while the unique Fish’O’Mania, the World Cup of fishing, now entering its 20th year, will also stay with the network.

Also included is the popular World Seniors Snooker Championship which sees legends of the baize compete once again, the PGA EuroPro Tour, the 15 event developmental golf tour that has produced some of today’s golfing superstars and the Weber Cup which pitches Europe and America’s finest tenpin bowlers in a Ryder Cup-style competition.

Other events include the World Pool Masters, pocket billiards oldest invitational event, the World Cup of Pool which sees 32 nations compete and the FLW Outdoors Bass Fishing, the big-money US-based tournament fishing circuit, as well as the Fish ‘O’ Mania International event.

The new Sky Sports agreement is an extension of an long-term relationship between the broadcaster and Matchroom Sport that goes back to 1991 – Sky Sports’ inaugural year.

Matchroom already has existing deals with Sky Sports for live boxing and PDC darts.

Matchroom Sport chairman Barry Hearn said: “Our long-standing relationship with Sky Sports has been a vital ingredient in the Matchroom story over the years and we are very excited to be continuing it into the future.

“Without doubt, Sky Sports have always been the pioneer in sports TV with production values and levels of creativity that leave the competition in their wake.

“We are excited to be providing them with a variety of events in a variety of sports which showcase these sports to huge UK audiences.”
