FOOTBALL: BBC Sport confirms UEFA Women’s Euro 2013 coverage

BBC Sport has announced that live TV coverage of the 2013 Women’s European Football Championship will have a new home on BBC Three.

With England representing the home nations, football fans will be able to tune in to BBC Three for a host of live matches as well as extensive highlights throughout the tournament that takes place in Sweden between July 10-28.

The BBC has also confirmed that it will screen this summer’s FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil which runs from June 15-30, forming part of a busy summer of international football.

Coverage of the 2013 Women’s Euros begins two days before a ball is kicked on July 8, with a preview show on BBC Two and BBC Two HD.

Once the tournament begins on July 10 there will be 16 games shown live on the BBC, with 14 games of those on BBC Three and two on BBC Two and BBC Two HD, including the final on 28 July.

BBC Three’s live programmes will start at 7pm and include highlights of the earlier games before live coverage of the 7.30pm kick-offs, ensuring fans won’t miss out on any of the action.

The BBC secured live rights to the competition last December and will show all of England’s matches live as Hope Powell’s team bid to become European champions for the first time.

Jacqui Oatley, the first female commentator on Match of the Day and a regular reporter for Football Focus and The Football League Show, will present all of BBC TV’s live broadcasts.

Alongside her will be a wealth of footballing experience in the studio, as guests providing analysis will include ex-England Internationals Faye White and Sue Smith, while match commentary will be led by Guy Mowbray and Lucy Ward.

All of England’s matches will also be broadcast live on BBC Radio 5 live or 5 live Sports Extra.

In addition to TV and radio coverage, the BBC Sport website has live text commentaries on every England game along with the latest news, reports and on-demand video highlights.

Every televised game will be streamed live across the BBC Sport website, mobile, IPTV and the smartphone app.

BBC TV will also cover the Confederations Cup tournament in June, the official prelude to country’s hosting of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

A selection of live games are expected to be shown on BBC Three, including the final on June 30, in a tournament which includes defending world champions Spain as well as Italy, Uruguay, Mexico, Nigeria, Japan and Tahiti, plus hosts Brazil.

Further details of the BBC’s Confederations Cup coverage will be announced in due course.

“With the tournament being broadcast on BBC Three we want to build on the momentum of London 2012 by making women’s football available to new audiences.

“The Women’s Euros joins an impressive BBC Sport football portfolio that includes the Premier League on Match Of The Day and 5 live, the Football League, this summer’s Confederations Cup and next year’s FIFA World Cup.

The corporation’s coverage of the 2013 UEFA Women’s European Championships comes as part of BBC Sport’s increased commitment to women’s football.

On May 20, BBC TV will broadcast a preview show of the FA Women’s Cup Final on BBC Two, with live coverage of the final itself on May 26.

Later in the year there will be four FA Women’s Super League programmes providing goals round-ups, highlights and features as well as looking ahead to England Women’s World Cup qualifiers, which will also be shown live on BBC Two.

The BBC’s Women’s Euro 2013 coverage of will be produced by independent production company Sunset+Vine.
