RACING: Channel 4 launches ‘Horse Tracker’ app

Channel 4 has launched a brand new second screen app which for the first time will allow viewers to track the position and speed of the horses in the John Smith’s Grand National.

As part of its commitment to broadcast the showpiece event for the first time in 2013, Channel 4 has introduced this ground-breaking innovation to bring viewers even closer to the world’s most famous horse race at Aintree this year.

The free Channel 4 Horse Tracker app is available to download immediately from the Apple App Store while a non-synchronised version of tracker will also be available online via the Channel 4 website.

TECHNOLOGY: BBC launches Connected Red Button service

The BBC has launched Connected Red Button, reinventing the corporation’s popular red button service for the future by effortlessly bringing TV, radio and online content together in the simplest possible way.

The new service is available now in around 1.2 million homes with Virgin Media’s TiVo boxes, and will be rolled out to other internet-connected TVs over the coming months.

The move comes shortly after the BBC scaled back its Red Button video streams on Freesat, Sky and Virgin from five to just one, with the aim of replacing these linear channels with internet streams that can be accessed via web-connected TVs.

BROADCASTING: BBC scales back Red Button service

The BBC will cut the number of video streams it offers through its interactive Red Button TV service later this month, as it shifts the focus of the service to emerging online platforms.

From October 15, the BBC will reduce the number of red button video streams from five to just one to more than 20 million homes with Sky, Freesat and Virgin Media, bringing the service in line with its existing Freeview offering.

TECHNOLOGY: BBC Sport launches live streaming app for Facebook‎

BBC Sport has launched a Facebook application offering users live streams from the Wimbledon tennis championships and up to 24 streams of Olympics coverage.

This is the first time the BBC has streamed live sporting events via the social networking website.

The new app promises to deliver a rich social viewing experience, plugging online audiences into the communal excitement of some of the biggest sporting moments of the year.
