OLYMPICS: BBC Sport launches new Olympic magazine series

Almost a year on from the spectacular London 2012 Games, BBC Sport has announced it is to launch a new Olympic magazine series and broadcast campaign encouraging sports participation across the UK.

Inspire: The Olympic Journey – a new monthly series airing on Saturday afternoons on BBC One – will celebrate the biggest names, the rising stars and the unsung heroes of Olympic sport.

Presented by Gabby Logan, the series will be accompanied by Get Inspired, a multiplatform, pan-BBC initiative to promote participation and help individuals get more involved in grass-root sporting activities.


RUGBY LEAGUE: BBC and Premier Sports share 2013 Rugby League World Cup rights

BBC Sport and Premier Sports will share the rights to broadcast live coverage of the 2013 Rugby League World Cup to be held this Autumn across England and Wales.

The BBC will screen extensive free-to-air television coverage of the 2013 tournament, including live games and regular highlights. The corporation has also secured the rights to the 2017 World Cup (host TBC), plus TV coverage of the 2014 and 2016 Four Nations tournaments.

Subscription channel Premier Sports will screen all 28 games live from the 2013 tournament, which kicks off on Saturday, October 26 and represents the biggest international sporting event taking place in the UK during 2013.


FOOTBALL: BBC Sport boosts commitment to women’s football

BBC Sport has announced a raft of new programming which will see an increased commitment to women’s football across its TV, radio and online platforms.

In a welcome boost its profile following a breakthrough year in 2012, there will be more air-time and coverage dedicated to women’s football on the BBC than ever before, including continued live coverage of England internationals as well as the Women’s FA Cup Final, which returns to the BBC in 2013.

For the first time there will be regular terrestrial highlights of the FA Women’s Super League (FA WSL), the semi-professional summer football league introduced in 2011.

In addition, the BBC will provide extensive coverage of the 2013 UEFA Women’s European Championships in Sweden.

FOOTBALL: Women’s FA Cup Final returns to BBC TV

The Women’s FA Cup Final will return to terrestrial television in 2013 after the BBC regained the rights to broadcast English womens football’s showpiece match.

The 2013 final will be staged at the Keepmoat Stadium, home to Doncaster Rovers Belles, on Sunday, May 26 and will be broadcast live on BBC Two and the soon-to-be-launched BBC Two HD channel.

It promises to signal the start of an amazing summer of women’s football, building up to BBC TV’s live coverage of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2013 finals in July.

SNOOKER: BBC Sport retains World Snooker rights

The BBC will continue to be the home of world snooker after signing a new deal to broadcast the sport’s biggest domestic tournaments until at least 2017, extending the current agreement by a further three years.

The corporation will continue to cover the World Championship, UK Championship and the Masters until at least the end of the 2016/17 season, and there is also the option to continue with one further event after 2014, ensuring the sport’s biggest events stay on terrestrial television.

BBC Sport will continue to act as host broadcaster for all three events, which will be given extensive network coverage throughout the UK on BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Red Button and online via the BBC Sport website.

DARTS: BBC extends BDO World Championships TV deal until 2016

BBC Sport has extended its commitment to screen free-to-air coverage of the British Darts Organisation’s World Professional Championships until 2016.

The new deal was announced on the eve of the 2013 tournament beginning at the famous Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green, and will extend the BBC’s long-standing partnership with the BDO to almost 40 years.

FOOTBALL: BBC secures UEFA Women’s Euro 2013 rights

The BBC has acquired the rights to broadcast every match from the 2013 UEFA Women’s European Championship in Sweden next summer.

The deal will see live coverage of every England match, plus both semi-finals and the final played out across BBC Two and BBC Three.

In addition, all other peak-time games will be broadcast on BBC Three.

ATHLETICS: Channel 4 hands 2013 World Championships rights to the BBC

Channel 4 have offloaded the live rights to the 2013 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Moscow to the BBC.

Both broadcasters reached a “commercial agreement” which will see the transfer of the broadcast rights to next year’s showpiece athletics event pass to the corporation.

The last World Championships in Daegu in 2011 were covered by Channel 4, but the broadcaster has decided to pull the plug on their agreement with the IAAF a year early after losing out to the BBC for the next term.

The corporation were due to take back the showcase track and field contract from Channel 4 in 2014 on a four-year deal that includes the World Championships coming to London in 2017.

TV: BBC overhauls Sports Personality of the Year

The BBC will bring the curtain down on a phenomenal year for British sport in a revamped Sports Personality of the Year ceremony.

Given the calibre and number of potential candidates that 2012 has produced, the corporation has decided to extend the shortlist to 12 sportspeople, an increase from 10 in previous years.

The selection process to determine the final shortlist has also been overhauled, with former SPOTY nominees, sports journalists and broadcasters included on an expert panel that will decide the final 12.

Rounding off what has been a sensational sporting year, viewers will decide their BBC Sports Personality of the Year during the live broadcast from Excel, London, on Sunday, December 16 on BBC One.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL: BBC to air Monday night NFL matches on Red Button/Online

UPDATE: Live Monday night NFL matches on BBC Red Button will have a new look from week 10 of the regular season.

Beginning with the clash between the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers, the BBC’s coverage will now feature a new studio-based show, produced by NFL International in conjunction with USP Content.

The shows will be presented by BBC Radio 5 live’s Darren Fletcher, with former Indianapolis Colts linebacker Rocky Boiman joining him in the studio to provide expert analysis.

OLYMPICS: BBC to broadcast Olympic Games until 2020

The BBC has won the rights to cover the next four summer and winter Olympic Games up to 2020 after signing a new deal with the International Olympics Committee (IOC).

The deal will include exclusive TV, radio and digital rights for the next two summer Olympics in Rio (2016) and the 2020 Games, as well as the next two winter Olympic Games in Sochi (2014) and Pyeongchang (2018).

TENNIS: BBC to screen ATP World Tour Finals until 2013

BBC Sport will continue to provide free-to-air coverage of the end-of-season Barclays ATP World Tour Finals after signing a two-year extension to their current broadcast agreement.

The new deal will see the BBC broadcast the next two editions of the event at the O2 Arena in London in November 2012 and 2013.
