RACING: Cheltenham Festival 2013 – Live on Channel 4

Twenty thrilling races and over 20 hours of live action featuring the world’s best jump jockeys and horses will be televised live on Channel 4 from the 2013 Cheltenham Festival.

Jump racing’s greatest festival to provide four days of magic, madness and magnificence, played out on a stage framed by the breathtaking vista of the Cotswold Hills.

The 2013 edition runs from March 12-15 and Channel 4 will have extensive coverage of the first major meeting on the British racing calendar, led for the first time by Clare Balding and the new on-air team.

RACING: Racing UK takes Ascot from At The Races

Racing UK will gain a hugely significant addition to its roster of televised tracks following a decision by Ascot to award them the broadcast rights for all events at the famous racecourse from June 2014.

The country’s premier venue, home to Royal Ascot every June, will link up with Racecourse Media Group, the parent company of Racing UK which already broadcasts action from the majority of the UK’s major racecourses, including Cheltenham, Aintree, Epsom, Newmarket, York and Goodwood.

The move is a significant setback for rival channel At The Races, which has held the rights to Ascot race meetings since 2004, and is now left with a portfolio mainly consisting of middle and low-grade courses.

RACING: ‘A Racing Portrait: For The Love’ – Documentary on Channel 4

A documentary profiling top amateur jockey Sam Waley-Cohen, who became the first non-professional to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup for 30 years, will be broadcast on Channel 4 this Saturday.

The 30-minute film, entitled A Racing Portrait: For The Love, follows Waley-Cohen on the journey towards his historic victory in the 2011 Gold Cup onboard Long Run, beating the legendary Kauto Star and Denman in a spectacular display.

RACING: Channel 4 unveils new horse racing team

Channel 4 has confirmed its full line-up of presenters, commentators and reporters for its exclusive coverage of horse racing on terrestrial television from 2013.

Having already secured the services of Clare Balding as lead presenter, experienced racing broadcaster Nick Luck will take on a key presenter role supporting Balding on all the sport’s major events.

Members of the current Channel 4 team including Emma Spencer, Jim McGrath and Simon Holt have been retained, and they will be joined by new names and faces on a refreshed Channel 4 Racing on January 1st 2013.

RACING: No terrestrial TV coverage of 2012 Arc

The 2012 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe will not be shown on free-to-air television after the BBC and Channel 4 decided against picking up the rights to the event.

Dedicated racing channels At The Races and Racing UK will pick up coverage of Europe’s most prestigious flat race live from Longchamp, but none of the meeting will be broadcast on a free-to-air network for the first time in many years.

RACING: Clare Balding joins Channel 4 Racing

Channel 4 has announced that Clare Balding will join the broadcaster as lead presenter of its horse racing coverage from 2013.

The popular presenter, who received huge critical acclaim for her work during the Olympic Games, will work alongside a combination of familiar Channel 4 Racing faces and new talent to be announced later in the year, as the channel welcomes the arrival of all the sport’s premium events from next year, including the Grand National.

In conjunction with Balding’s arrival, Channel 4 has also announced that it has awarded IMG Sports Media the four-year production contract for the corporation’s exclusive racing coverage, taking over from the long-serving Highflyer Productions.
