BROADCASTING: BT acquires ESPN’s TV channels

BT Group and ESPN have agreed a multi-million pound deal that will see the telecoms giant acquire ESPN’s UK and Ireland TV channels.

Comprising of ESPN and ESPN America, BT will also take on ESPN’s current sports rights portfolio, including live FA Cup, Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League, UEFA Europa League and German Bundesliga games.

The transaction, subject to regulatory clearance, is expected to be completed at the end of July after which BT will continue to operate at least one ESPN-branded channel which is expected to form part of the BT Sport TV package that will be launched this summer.

However, ESPN’s popular archive sports channel ESPN Classic is expected to cease transmission in the UK after seven years as it not included as part of the BT/ESPN deal.

TENNIS: ESPN announces ATP and WTA Tour schedule for 2013

ESPN has announced its schedule of live ATP 250 and WTA Tour tournaments for 2013 featuring the world’s best players.

Following ESPN’s coverage of the ATP Brisbane International in January, where Wimbledon runner-up and London 2012 Olympic champion Andy Murray retained his title, the line-up of top international tennis continues throughout the year with a further 14 tournaments set be covered from February to November.

BASKETBALL: NBA agrees new UK TV deal with ESPN

The NBA will be back on UK television screens after the league and ESPN announced a new agreement for live coverage of the remainder of the 2012-13 season in the UK and Ireland.

ESPN’s coverage begins this Thursday (December 6) with New York Knicks at Miami Heat, and the channel will bring basketball fans three live games per week throughout the remainder of the regular-season.

No UK TV deal was put in place at the beginning of the season in October, meaning fans missed out on watching the opening games on television and instead had to view them online via subscription on the NBA website.

FOOTBALL: ESPN announces 2012 FA Cup Final coverage

ESPN is to bring fans the every twist and turn of the 2012 FA Cup Final on May 5 between Chelsea and Liverpool in 3D and commercial-free as part of a full day of live programming from Wembley.

The broadcaster will continue to revive the tradition of broadcasting all day around the final of the world’s oldest domestic cup competition, with a host of dedicated programmes, documentaries and special live editions of the channel’s signature football shows.

FOOTBALL: Sir Alex Ferguson – 25 Years United – New series on ESPN Classic

ESPN Classic will broadcast a new series of special programmes paying tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson as he approaches his 25th anniversary in charge of Manchester United.

25 Years United will chronicle Ferguson’s long and illustrious reign at Old Trafford, with the help of classic archive clips and exclusive rare footage.

Starting on Monday 31st October, each episode of the five-part series will air throughout the week leading up to the 25th anniversary of Ferguson’s appointment as Manchester United manager on Sunday 6th November.
