RACING: QIPCO Guineas Festival 2013 – Live on Channel 4

The historic QIPCO Guineas Festival at Newmarket sees a selection of Europe’s finest racehorses going head-to-head over the Rowley Mile in the famous 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas races, live on Channel 4 Racing.

This year’s festival is set to be even bigger than ever as the racecourse celebrates the 200th running of the 1,000 Guineas, one of British racing’s five Classics.

Providing the annual curtain raiser for the new Flat season, the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas kicks off the 2013 QIPCO British Champions Series and represents a great opportunity to capitalise on the buzz of a new season.

AWARDS: Clare Balding to receive special BAFTA TV award

Sports presenter Clare Balding is to receive a special award at next month’s BAFTA Television Awards.

She will be recognised for her ‘Outstanding Achievement in Factual Presenting’ at the ceremony to be held at London’s Royal Festival Hall on May 12.

The BAFTA committee described her work covering London 2012 – on the BBC for the Olympics and on Channel 4 for the Paralympics – had made her ‘a national treasure’.

RACING: Dubai World Cup 2013 – Live on Channel 4 & Sky Sports

Some of the world’s finest runners and riders descend on the luxurious Meydan Racecourse to take part in the richest horse race in the world – the $10million Dubai World Cup.

Channel 4 will broadcast a special programme featuring live coverage of the 18th Dubai World Cup, along with selected races from Meydan in the main Channel 4 Racing programme on Saturday afternoon (March 30), while all eight races on the Meydan card will sbe hown as they happen on Sky Sports 4.

RACING: ‘Jump Boys’ – Documentary on Channel 4

Ahead of the 2013 Cheltenham Festival, Channel 4 will screen a candid documentary that explores the extraordinary lives and bravery of National Hunt jockeys.

Three of Ireland’s top jockeys, Ruby Walsh, Barry Geraghty and Davy Russell, allowed exclusive fly-on-the-wall access to their National Hunt season from November 2011 to April 2012.

The one-hour Jump Boys documentary, narrated by Alastair Down, gives viewers an in-depth, no-holds-barred glimpse into one of the toughest professions in world sport.

SPORTS VIEW: New Channel 4 Racing team more Real Madrid than Barcelona as new show takes first stride

Sport On The Box is delighted to welcome its first regular contributor to the website – Vernon Grant.

Since 1980, Vernon has been a producer of a number of televised sports programmes for major broadcasters, including Sky Sports, ITV and Channel 4, as well as several independent production companies.

He now runs the sports betting website www.vgtips.co.uk, and will give SOTB his unique and informed take on a number of topics and issues related to sports broadcasting both past and present.

Vernon begins his new regular column by reviewing the opening transmissions of the new-look Channel 4 Racing, which relaunched on New Year’s Day with Clare Balding and Nick Luck heading up the refreshed on-air team.

RACING: King George VI Chase – Live on Channel 4

Long Run heads a field of 10 horses declared for Boxing Day’s traditional King George VI Chase at Kempton Park with all the action live on Channel 4.

Jump racing legend Kauto Star and jockey Ruby Walsh thrilled the vast Kempton Park crowds 12 months ago to claim an historic fifth King George victory.

With Kauto having recently been retired and so many young contenders coming through, a new King of Kempton will be crowned in the famous race on Boxing Day, which is part of the first day of the two-day William Hill Winter Festival meeting.

RACING: Racing UK takes Ascot from At The Races

Racing UK will gain a hugely significant addition to its roster of televised tracks following a decision by Ascot to award them the broadcast rights for all events at the famous racecourse from June 2014.

The country’s premier venue, home to Royal Ascot every June, will link up with Racecourse Media Group, the parent company of Racing UK which already broadcasts action from the majority of the UK’s major racecourses, including Cheltenham, Aintree, Epsom, Newmarket, York and Goodwood.

The move is a significant setback for rival channel At The Races, which has held the rights to Ascot race meetings since 2004, and is now left with a portfolio mainly consisting of middle and low-grade courses.

ATHLETICS: Channel 4 hands 2013 World Championships rights to the BBC

Channel 4 have offloaded the live rights to the 2013 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Moscow to the BBC.

Both broadcasters reached a “commercial agreement” which will see the transfer of the broadcast rights to next year’s showpiece athletics event pass to the corporation.

The last World Championships in Daegu in 2011 were covered by Channel 4, but the broadcaster has decided to pull the plug on their agreement with the IAAF a year early after losing out to the BBC for the next term.

The corporation were due to take back the showcase track and field contract from Channel 4 in 2014 on a four-year deal that includes the World Championships coming to London in 2017.

RACING: Channel 4 unveils new horse racing team

Channel 4 has confirmed its full line-up of presenters, commentators and reporters for its exclusive coverage of horse racing on terrestrial television from 2013.

Having already secured the services of Clare Balding as lead presenter, experienced racing broadcaster Nick Luck will take on a key presenter role supporting Balding on all the sport’s major events.

Members of the current Channel 4 team including Emma Spencer, Jim McGrath and Simon Holt have been retained, and they will be joined by new names and faces on a refreshed Channel 4 Racing on January 1st 2013.

QIPCO British Champions Day brings the curtain down on an exciting and historic season, with the headlines set to be dominated by what is probably the final appearance of the feted Frankel, regarded in some quarters as the best racehorse in history.

RACING: No terrestrial TV coverage of 2012 Arc

The 2012 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe will not be shown on free-to-air television after the BBC and Channel 4 decided against picking up the rights to the event.

Dedicated racing channels At The Races and Racing UK will pick up coverage of Europe’s most prestigious flat race live from Longchamp, but none of the meeting will be broadcast on a free-to-air network for the first time in many years.
