AWARDS: Channel 4 wins BAFTA award for London 2012 Paralympics coverage

Channel 4 has won the BAFTA TV award in the ‘Sport and Live Event’ category for its ground-breaking coverage of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

The broadcaster fought off strong competition from the production team behind the London 2012 opening ceremony, as well as BBC Sport’s coverage of ‘Super Saturday’ at the London 2012 Olympics and the Wimbledon men’s singles final.

Commenting on stage on behalf of the Channel 4 on-air team at the ceremony staged at London’s Royal Festival Hall, former Paralympian Ade Adepitan, who co-presented alongside Clare Balding at the Games, said he was in shock that the broadcaster had claimed the prize.

PARALYMPICS: Channel 4 retains Paralympics rights for 2014 and 2016 Games

Channel 4 has secured the rights to screen the Paralympic Games in a historic deal with the International Paralympic Committee for the Sochi 2014 Winter Games and Rio 2016 Summer Games.

The deal, believed to be worth about £7m, includes multi-platform broadcast rights within the UK and will see the broadcaster build on its acclaimed coverage of London 2012 which broke UK viewing records for Paralympic sport and reached 69 per cent of the population.

As part of the agreement Channel 4 will screen over 45 hours of coverage from next year’s Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, the most ever by a British broadcaster, plus comprehensive coverage of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Summer Games, screening a minimum of 200 hours.

Channel 4’s ‘Meet The Superhumans’ tag-line for the London 2012 Paralympic Games has emerged as one of the most successful marketing campaigns of the year after winning a host of awards.

As well as sweeping the board at the Promax Awards and the British Television Advertising Awards, Channel 4’s innovative work on promoting the Paralympics has also been given the prestigious Campaign of the Year award by Campaign magazine.

LONDON 2012: Our Greatest Team Parade – Live on BBC One, Channel 4 and Sky News

Britain’s carnival of sport culminates with a victory parade through the heart of London to honour the sensational efforts and achievements of Great Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

More than a million people are expected to line the streets of London as over 800 athletes travel on 21 floats from Mansion House to Buckingham Palace on Monday, September 10.

BBC One, Channel 4 and Sky News will have comprehensive coverage of the day’s events, capturing the atmosphere along the route as the athletes the British public take part in the final celebration of London 2012.

LONDON 2012: Paralympics Closing Ceremony – Exclusively live on Channel 4

London’s unforgettable summer of sporting drama, excitement and achievement draws to a spectacular conclusion with the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

LONDON 2012: Sky and Virgin to carry Channel 4’s extra Paralympics channels

Sky and Virgin Media customers will be able to watch uninterrupted coverage of the 2012 London Paralympic Games this summer via three new channels dedicated to screening Channel 4’s exclusive live coverage

Channel 4’s extra channels, which are being created specifically for the Paralympics, will be available in both standard definition (SD) and high-definition (HD) on Sky, meaning that more than five million customers with Sky+HD boxes will be able to enjoy the Paralympics in pinpoint high-definition, creating an even richer and more immersive experience.

The channels are also expected to launch on Virgin Media, and will complement Channel 4’s comprehensive coverage across C4, More4 and channel4.com.

DISABILITY SPORT: BT Paralympic World Cup 2012 – Live on Channel 4

Channel 4 will screen more than 20 hours of coverage from BT Paralympic World Cup in Manchester on 22-26 May.

This will be the London 2012 Paralympics broadcaster’s second successive year covering the event, which will act as vital preparation ahead of the Paralympic foray in just over 100 days.

Channel 4 will also utilise the majority of their Paralympic Games on-screen team at the Manchester Regional Arena, including Clare Balding and Ade Adepitan, giving viewers a taste of what is to come from their presenting line-up later this summer.
