AWARDS: Clare Balding to receive special BAFTA TV award

Sports presenter Clare Balding is to receive a special award at next month’s BAFTA Television Awards.

She will be recognised for her ‘Outstanding Achievement in Factual Presenting’ at the ceremony to be held at London’s Royal Festival Hall on May 12.

The BAFTA committee described her work covering London 2012 – on the BBC for the Olympics and on Channel 4 for the Paralympics – had made her ‘a national treasure’.

BROADCASTING: Tony Gubba – 1943-2013

Veteran sports broadcaster Tony Gubba has died aged 69 following a short illness, his family have announced.

A long-serving member of the BBC commentary team, Gubba covered everything from World Cups to Summer and Winter Olympics in a varied and distinguished career that spanned more than five decades.

He was one of the most familiar and versatile personalities of British television sport during his career, fronting iconic BBC shows like Grandstand, Sportsnight and Match of the Day during the 1970s and 80s, and, more recently, was the voice of ITV’s Sunday night celebrity skating show Dancing on Ice.

MOTORSPORT: ITV4 to screen highlights of inaugural BRDC Formula 4 Championship

The inaugural BRDC Formula 4 Championship will be broadcast on free-to-air television in 2013 after series organisers MSV secured a highlights deal with ITV.

Created by former grand prix driver Jonathan Palmer’s MotorSport Vision (MSV), the new championship has been created to help young drivers in their attempts to bridge the gap between junior single-seater formulae and a potential career in Formula 1.

An hour-long show will be screened one week after each of the eight events in a prime-time Sunday evening slot on ITV4 and in high-definition on ITV4 HD.

TV: Clare Balding to front her own sports chat show on BT Sport

Award-winning sports broadcaster Clare Balding has signed up to present a unique programme for BT Sport.

The presenter, who was highly praised for her work fronting the BBC London 2012 Olympics and Channel 4’s Paralympics coverage, will present and co-produce a weekly sports magazine show that will feature interviews with major sporting names and discussion of big sporting issues.

It will also shine a spotlight on women’s sport, giving the next generation the chance to fully embrace a variety of sports and sporting stars.

FOOTBALL: Jason Mohammad announced as new presenter of BBC’s Final Score

Jason Mohammad will replace Gabby Logan as the regular presenter of the BBC’s Final Score.

The Welsh presenter, who has worked on a variety of sports programmes during the last decade for BBC Wales, as well as BBC Sport’s rugby union and Olympics coverage, will take over the reigns of the corporation’s football results service full-time from the start of the 2013/14 season.

It has also been confirmed that Mohammad will replace Rishi Persad as the BBC’s secondary snooker presenter, starting with the 2013 World Championships in April.

FOOTBALL: Mark Chapman to replace Colin Murray as Match of the Day 2 presenter

Colin Murray has been dropped by the BBC as presenter of Match of the Day 2 after three years in the role.

The Northern Irishman, who took over from Adrian Chiles after his defection to ITV in 2010, is set to be replaced at the end of the current Premier League season by Mark Chapman.

According to the Daily Mail’s Charlie Sale, Chapman is regarded by BBC bosses as a “more suitable host for a programme that increasingly features the most important Premier League matches of the weekend”.

FORMULA 1: Suzi Perry becomes the new face of BBC F1

Suzi Perry has been announced as the new presenter of the BBC’s Formula 1 coverage.

The former MotoGP presenter will link-up with BBC favourites Eddie Jordan and David Coulthard for the entire 19-race season, starting in Melbourne on March 15-17.

Perry replaces Jake Humphrey, who left the corporation to become the face of BT Sport’s Premier League coverage.

The BBC have also confirmed the nine races that will be shown live on terrestrial television during the 2013 season, including the British, Belgian, Italian and the season-ending Brazilian Grands Prix, but the Monaco Grand Prix is not included as one of the live BBC races.

RUGBY UNION: Rugby World Cup 2015 – Pool Stage Draw – Live on ITV4

With less than three years to go until rugby union’s greatest showpiece arrives back in England, the crucial draw for the pool stages of the 2015 Rugby World Cup takes place on Monday, December 3.

FOOTBALL: Jake Humphrey leaves BBC to front BT’s Premier League coverage

BBC sports presenter Jake Humphrey has announced he is to leave the corporation at the end of the year to become the main anchor of BT’s Premier League coverage.

Humphrey, who fronted some of the BBC’s Euro 2012 coverage from Poland and Ukraine this summer, will start work with BT’s forthcoming new sports channel in January 2013 after signing a four-year deal.

During ten years with the BBC, he has been best known for fronting the broadcaster’s Formula 1 coverage, as well as a high profile stint covering the London 2012 Olympics and co-hosting the BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony.

He will continue to present the BBC’s F1 coverage for the remainder of the 2012 season.

RACING: Clare Balding joins Channel 4 Racing

Channel 4 has announced that Clare Balding will join the broadcaster as lead presenter of its horse racing coverage from 2013.

The popular presenter, who received huge critical acclaim for her work during the Olympic Games, will work alongside a combination of familiar Channel 4 Racing faces and new talent to be announced later in the year, as the channel welcomes the arrival of all the sport’s premium events from next year, including the Grand National.

In conjunction with Balding’s arrival, Channel 4 has also announced that it has awarded IMG Sports Media the four-year production contract for the corporation’s exclusive racing coverage, taking over from the long-serving Highflyer Productions.

ATHLETICS: Channel 4 drops Ortis Deley as World Championships anchor

Channel 4 has dropped Ortis Deley as the main presenter of the World Athletics Championships in South Korea following hundreds of complaints.

A spokesman confirmed it had “scaled back” his appearances, but that he would remain on air. Deley, best known for presenting Channel 5’s The Gadget Show, struggled with the live broadcasts.

Footage of his numerous embarrassing on-air gaffes has gone viral via the internet, and have recieved thousands of hits on Youtube.

Channel 4 defended the appointment of the inexperienced Deley, saying ‘it is part of our mandate to give opportunities to new presenters’.
