As British football’s most successful manager steps down after 26 years in charge at Manchester United, BBC Sport pays tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson in a Football Focus special. 

Football Focus presenter Dan Walker introduces ‘Fergie Time’, a special tribute programme tonight (May 8) on BBC One at 10.35pm that will look back at Ferguson’s extraordinary managerial career with the red devils, where the 71-year-old amassed a sensational 38 trophies during his lengthy spell in charge.

BROADCASTING: Tony Gubba – 1943-2013

Veteran sports broadcaster Tony Gubba has died aged 69 following a short illness, his family have announced.

A long-serving member of the BBC commentary team, Gubba covered everything from World Cups to Summer and Winter Olympics in a varied and distinguished career that spanned more than five decades.

He was one of the most familiar and versatile personalities of British television sport during his career, fronting iconic BBC shows like Grandstand, Sportsnight and Match of the Day during the 1970s and 80s, and, more recently, was the voice of ITV’s Sunday night celebrity skating show Dancing on Ice.

CRICKET: Christopher Martin-Jenkins – 1945-2013

BBC Test Match Special commentator Christopher Martin-Jenkins has died of cancer at the age of 67.

Affectionately known by colleagues and listeners as ‘CMJ’, he was one of cricket’s most distinguished and authoritative journalists and broadcasters for over 40 years as well as a former president of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).

Described by the current TMS producer Adam Mountford as “one of the voices of the English summer”, Martin-Jenkins was diagnosed with cancer in January 2012, shortly after returning from commentating duties on England’s series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.

In a statement his family said: “Christopher died peacefully at home this morning after his brave resistance to cancer.

CRICKET: Tony Greig – 1946-2012

Former England captain and popular television commentator Tony Greig has died aged 66 after suffering a heart attack in Sydney.

A much-loved voice of the game across the world, he played 58 Tests for England from 1972 to 1977, including 14 as skipper, before relinquishing the captaincy to join up with Australian media mogul Kerry Packer’s breakaway World Series.

After retiring from the game, Greig went on to become one of the popular and distinctive voices in cricket television commentary, working primarily for Australian network Channel Nine on their coverage of home Tests and limited overs matches for more than 30 years.

FOOTBALL: Gary Speed tribute on S4C

A moving documentary about the life and legacy of the late Gary Speed will be broadcast by S4C on Thursday, December 27 at 8.25pm.

Presented by his former Wales team-mate John Hartson, the programme is the first detailed portrait to be broadcast on television with the full co-operation of Gary’s family.

The documentary will examine the personal qualities that made Gary so highly regarded and universally admired by those from inside and outside the game.

DARTS: Sid Waddell – 1940-2012

August 12, 2012

Sid Waddell, the man known to millions as ‘the voice of darts’, has passed away at the age of 72.

He had been battling bowel cancer since last September and the news of his death was confirmed on Sunday morning (August 12).

A statement from his manager Dick Allix read: “With great sadness, we announce that following a long illness, broadcaster and author Sid Waddell died peacefully with all his family around him late last night, Saturday August 11th, 2012.”

MOTORSPORT: Sky Sports to screen Dan Wheldon tribute

The life and career of former IndyCar champion Dan Wheldon will be celebrated in a special programme on Sky Sports this week.

Dan Wheldon – A Tribute will air on Sky Sports 2 this Thursday at 10pm, with repeat showings on Friday.

Guests include ex-IndyCar racer Mark Blundell, former F1 driver Anthony Davidson and sportscar driver Johnny Mowlem.
